Local Businesses to Showcase Green Programs; Jack Phillips to Deliver Keynote Address

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange will showcase its soon-to-be LEED-certified Kaplan Hall in Newburgh when the College hosts the Orange County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Sustainability Summit, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 26.

The Chamber has partnered with the Orange County Association of Realtors, Orange County Partnership, Orange County Government, Mount Saint Mary College and SUNY Orange. The event is designed to help businesses and homeowners make sense of the “green” movement and to demonstrate how they may incorporate sustainable practices into their businesses or homes. Admission is $20 per person, which includes a continental breakfast and snacks.

“The purpose of the summit is to inform people in Orange County about the resources that exist to help businesses and individuals live and work sustainably,” said Dr. John A. D’Ambrosio, Chamber president. “We want to help people to connect the dots about how to be truly environmentally sustainable in terms of business, education, training and careers. There’s a ton of ‘green’ talk everywhere, but it’s time to put it all together in a meaningful way.”

Jack Phillips, co-author of “The Green Scorecard” and a world-renowned expert on accountability, measurement and evaluation, will be the keynote speaker. His address will begin at 8:45 a.m. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. Following Phillips’ keynote, which will include remarks on how to measure the success of any type of “green” project, breakout sessions will be held on topics including “green energy” and “low-cost steps to becoming a greener business.”

Exhibitors focusing on sustainable products and services will be on hand throughout the event. Complimentary copies of Phillips’ book will be given to the first 100 people attending the summit. Sponsor opportunities are available for the summit. Platinum Sponsors ($1,500) will receive a table in a prime location at the summit, display of their company banner, company logo and link on the Chamber website, and two complimentary tickets to the summit.

Gold Sponsors ($1,000) will receive a table in a prime location at the summit, their company logo and direct link on the Chamber website, and two complimentary tickets to the event. Silver Sponsors ($500) will receive a table at the summit and their company logo and link on the website. SUNY Orange’s Kaplan Hall, a new 85,000 square foot classroom and laboratory building, welcomed students for the first time this January. The building is the centerpiece of the College’s expanding Newburgh campus and features many sustainable features, including a rooftop array of photovoltaic panels; energy efficient lighting, heating and ventilating systems; and extensive use of materials comprised of recycled content. The campus also features a green roof over the underground parking garage that collects rainwater for irrigation use.
