Steve Hedderton and Chris Thurtle to Handle Publications, Social Media Respectively

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange has recently added a pair of new staff members to its Office of Communications, naming Stephen Hedderton as Assistant Director of Communications for Publications and Christopher Thurtle as Assistant Director of Communications for New Media.

PHOTO: Steve HeddertonIn his new role, Hedderton (right) will oversee design and production of many of the College’s publications, including the College catalog, credit and non-credit course bulletins, and a variety of handbooks, brochures, postcards and pamphlets. He will also provide editorial, writing and photography support for the College’s publications and web site, and coordinate other design and publication projects as needed.

Hedderton arrives at the College following a five-year stint as general manager of Minuteman Press. Prior to taking over day-to-day operation of the Middletown printing shop, Hedderton carved a 22-year career as an advertising, marketing and communications specialist. He served as marketing manager for both the Direct Marketing Association (1998-2005) in New York City and Magic Solutions International (1997) in Paramus, N.J. He has also held marketing positions with PaperDirect, Richard Smith Enterprises Corp. and Contractors Register Inc. Early in his career, he was an advertising account executive for Gannett Suburban Newspapers and the Times-Herald Record.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication from SUNY New Paltz and a master’s degree in communication arts from Iona College.

PHOTO: Chris ThurtleThurtle (left), an Orange County resident who spent the past 12 years as systems engineer and network manager for NetPublications in Poughkeepsie, will manage content and design of the SUNY Orange web site while also coordinating the College’s burgeoning social media program. He will also guide the College’s development of new online and social media tools to support student recruitment, academic curricula and community engagement.

At NetPub, Thurtle directed the company’s web sites and networks, supervised a web development team, and managed NetPub’s book portal and content management system. He established successful long-term relationships and projects on behalf of NetPub with Saks 5th Avenue and the Boy Scouts of America (Northeast Region). He also trained employees and clients on a variety of content management systems, portals and inventory/ordering systems. Thurtle also has served as an instructor with SUNY Orange’s Continuing and Professional Education Department.

Thurtle earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and information systems from Leicester University in England before acquiring his master’s degree in psychology from Marist College.
