Juried Show “Illuminations” to be Debut Exhibit in College’s New Newburgh Campus Art Gallery

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – SUNY Orange is inviting visual artists living or working in Orange County to submit works for “Illuminations,” a juried art exhibit scheduled for the spring that will serve as the debut show in the College’s new Newburgh campus art gallery. Prizes for first and second place will be awarded in two categories: works on canvas or paper, and sculpture.

“Illuminations” will be on exhibit from March 3 through May 6 and will herald the opening of CenterArts, the gallery space in Kaplan Hall, SUNY Orange’s new classroom building located at the intersection of Grand and First streets in Newburgh. Construction of Kaplan Hall has just recently been completed and the building will be open for classes beginning Jan. 18. The “Illuminations” exhibit will be on display during the Kaplan Hall dedication celebration scheduled for March 24.

Artists are asked to mail CDs, photographs or prints of up to two pieces, as well as a résumé, brief biography and an application fee of $25 to the Cultural Affairs Office, SUNY Orange, Newburgh Campus, 5 Washington Center, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Each submission needs to include the artist’s name, title and dimensions of the piece, and a listing of medium/materials. The size limit is 36 inches by 50 inches for two-dimensional work. Three-dimensional pieces may not weigh more than 30 pounds and fit within the following dimensions: 30 inches wide, 50 inches high and 30 inches deep. Artists must enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope if they wish to have their submissions returned.

Submissions will be reviewed and selected by four jurors: Stuart Sachs, sculptor and professor of sculpture at Pratt Institute; Virginia Walsh, curator and director of the Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh; Martha Zola, Ph.D., painter and arts educator; and Peter Cody, Hudson Valley artist. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 1, 2011.

A listing of accepted art work, as well as a listing of the first and second prize winners, will be posted on the SUNY Orange website on Feb. 20, 2011. Prize winners will be guaranteed a prominent place in a future show in the gallery as well.
