Performances in Pine Bush, Monroe and Middletown Comprise 2010 Summer Appearance Calendar

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – For its 2010 summer concert series in late July and early August, the SUNY Orange Symphonic Band will offer a mixture of light classics, popular favorites, marches, jazz and Hollywood themes during three performances at locations across Orange County.

Under the direction of Kevin Scott, the band’s first concert will be held at the Village Center Gazebo on Route 52 in Pine Bush at 7 p.m., Friday, July 30 (rain location: Town of Crawford Town Hall on Route 302). The band will also participate in the Fire Fighter’s Day celebration at Museum Village in Monroe, taking the stage at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 1. The group’s final concert will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 6 at Middletown’s Festival Square on East Main Street (rain location: Paramount Theatre, 17 South St.). These concerts are sponsored by, respectively, the Town of Crawford, Museum Village and the City of Middletown

Admission to the Pine Bush and Middletown concerts will be free but there will be an entry fee for the Museum Village event.

For these performances, the band’s featured offerings will be Gustav Holst’s perennially beloved “First Suite in E-Flat” for military band; Michael Kamen’s music from the 1991 movie “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves” in an arrangement by Paul Lavender; Floyd Werle’s “An Ellington Portrait”; and Samuel Barber’s “Commando March,” commemorating that composer’s 100th birthday. The band will premiere Nancy Bloomer Deussen’s band arrangement of her orchestral work “American Hymn,” and Carlton L. Winston’s “When the Great Owl Sings (An Offering to Au Puch)”. Other selections include Sammy Nestico’s concert march “The Greenbriars of Wexley,” Johnny Mandel’s “The Shadow of Your Smile” and John Cacavas’ “Aria for Winds.”
