SummerStar Theatre Group Plans Six Performances of Musical at SUNY Orange’s Orange Hall Theatre

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Much as it has played out thousands of times on stage over the past 50 years, the story of “The Fantasticks” will fill the Orange Hall Theatre stage for six showings in June as SummerStar Theatre brings another of its award-winning summer productions to life on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange.

“The Fantasticks” radiates a timeless sweetness and sunniness: the starry-eyed boy and girl next door fall in love, yearn for the dangerous attractions of the world outside, then opt instead for fulfillment in each other's arms and in hearth and home. Show times will be 8 p.m. for Friday and Saturday evening performances on June 11, 12, 18 and 19, along with 3 p.m. Sunday performances on June 13 and 20.

Before the mud of Woodstock there were the love songs of “The Fantasticks.” Before Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon, before Elizabeth Taylor received an Academy Award for “Butterfield 8” and before Wilt Chamberlain completed the first of his seven consecutive years as basketball's top scorer, “Try To Remember” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” from “The Fantasticks” were part of our national culture. “The Fantasticks,” celebrating the 50th anniversary of its original production this summer, has charmed audiences since Dwight Eisenhower was President. Each generation from bobby-soxers to flower children to baby-boomers to cyberkids have embraced the universality of the show.

Jill Carroll will direct and choreograph “The Fantasticks” while Amanda Williams will serve as musical director. The cast includes: A.J. Hankins, Samantha Gillespie, Steve Davis, Carmine Garritano, Michael Delfino, Shawn Schorno and Max Schaefer.

Ticket prices are: $22, general admission; $16, senior citizens, faculty, staff and alumni; $14, students; and free for active duty military personnel. Group rates (10 or more) are available.
