Fundraiser for Autism Spectrum Fund Organized by Future Teacher’s Association

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – In support of Autism Awareness Month in April, students from the Education Department at SUNY Orange will be holding a “Move-A-Thon” to benefit the Autism Spectrum Fund from 9 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, April 10 at the College’s Middletown campus.

The “Move-A-Thon,” organized by the Future Teacher’s Association, is open to participants of all ages and will include a one-mile circuit through the Middletown campus. Participants can complete the course in whatever fashion they wish—walk, run, jog, bike, rollerblade, skip, stroll, dance, etc.—as long as they continue moving throughout.

In addition, an array of children’s activities will be held on the College’s Alumni Green, including face painting, “Simon Says,” a health-oriented ball toss, roaming cartoon characters and balloon animals.

The Orange County’s Sheriff’s Office will be providing children’s safety identification tags and the Mental Health Association in Orange County, Inc., will staff an information table. Students from SUNY Orange’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program will operate a “sensory” booth.

All children’s activities will run from 9 a.m. through Noon. The “Move-A-Thon” will begin at 10:30 a.m. On-site registration will begin at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. Participants who wish to pre-register are asked to do so by March 31. The registration form can be downloaded at www.sunyorange.edu. Registration is $20 per individual or $20 per group. The event will be held rain or shine.

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate, reason and socially interact with others. It is a lifelong disorder that affects individuals differently, and to varying degrees. Current statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicate that 1 in 100 children is affected by autism.

The Autism Spectrum Fund is managed by the Mental Health Association in Orange County and assists families of autistic individuals. The fund provides an annual stipend of up to $250 for parent training and/or purchase of goods and services for the person with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). An additional $100 is given for each additional individual with ASD in the family.
