Health Screenings, Information Offered in College’s Shepard Student Center

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Representatives of health and wellness organizations from throughout the Hudson Valley will be available to provide information and health screenings during SUNY Orange’s annual Wellness Fair planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, in the Fireplace Lounge of the George F. Shepard Student Center in Middletown.

Coordinated by the College’s Health Services Office, the Wellness Fair is open to students, faculty, staff and community members. Free vision, cholesterol, hearing, oral cancer and blood pressure screenings will be available, along with fitness assessments, massages and information on careers within the health and wellness professions.

In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about massage therapy, birth control, safe sex, HIV/STD prevention, health insurance, occupational and physical therapy, body mechanics, body fat composition, exercise physiology, smoking cessation, disease prevention, stress management and mental health, heart and spinal health, yoga for adults and children, women’s health, violence prevention, podiatry, and much more.

Throughout the Wellness Fair, the Health Services Office will also be offering free, confidential and anonymous OraQuick HIV tests, with results available in 10 minutes. The American Hearth Association will have representatives recruiting volunteers for the annual Heart Walk on May 2 and a counselor from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will be on hand.

Among those agencies and organizations expected to be on hand are: Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council, All About Health, Arden Hill Speech and Hearing (testing inside Health Services Office), Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Orange County, Excel Urgent Care, Mental Health Association of Orange County, Mentors (Dr. Jay Joerger), Metro Pool Inc., Middletown Community Health Center, My Choice Pregnancy Care Center, New York State Department of Health, Orange County Department of Health, Orange Regional Medical Center, Planned Parenthood, Safe Homes of Orange County, Scotchtown Chiropractic, The Children’s School of Yoga, YWCA, YMCA and the Rural Development Advisory Corp.

Alongside the coordinating efforts of the Health Services Office, SUNY Orange will be represented by its Career Services Office as well as academic departments for dental hygiene, movement science, occupational therapy assistant and physical therapist assistant. Nursing students from SUNY Orange will be distributing information about International Women’s Day.
