Nursing Student Cited for Pursuing Non-Traditional Career Path

PHOTO: Eric Haley, SUNY Orange student and Vanguard Award finalistMIDDLETOWN, N.Y. . – SUNY Orange nursing student Eric Haley, of Slate Hill, was recently named one of 24 finalists for the Vanguard Student Recognition Award, presented annually to selected high school and postsecondary students enrolled in career and technical education programs that are not traditional to their gender.

The awards program, established to recognize the unique contributions nontraditional students bring to their chosen field of study and to encourage all students interested in pursuing nontraditional careers, is coordinated by the NET Project and the New York State Education Department.

The NET (Nontraditional Employment & Training) Project provides statewide technical assistance to Career and Technical Education institutions that sponsor Carl D. Perkins funded programs for nontraditional career options, and is affiliated with Center for Women in Government & Civil Society (CWGCS) at University at Albany.

Haley, who will graduate from SUNY Orange’s nursing program this May, was nominated by professor Cheryl Ward-Simons. Nearly 100 students from across the state were nominated.
