Classes Include Photovoltaics, Solar Thermal Hot Water and Geothermal Installer’s Course

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange’s Continuing Education staff will offer a series of green technology courses at its Middletown campus this spring, beginning with a two-day Solar Thermal Hot Water System Design course on Feb. 13-14.

The solar thermal system design course is open to contractors, engineers, plumbers, builders, trades professionals, architects, students and homeowners interested in pursuing NABCEP Solar Thermal certification. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 and from Noon to 6 p.m. on Feb. 14 in Room 101 of the College’s Harriman Hall. Pete Skinner, president of E2G and Betsy Ferris Wyman of SunDog Solar, will serve as instructors. Registration is $399.

SUNY Orange’s Geothermal Installer Certification course will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 16-18 in Room 221 of the College Library. The course includes an exam for accreditation as a geothermal installer. Students must have a high school diploma, be able to complete simple arithmetic calculations and have a basic understanding of electricity. Cost of the course is $1,249.

The Photovoltaic Installer’s Course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday from April 3 through May 1 in Harriman Hall Room 211B. Students will learn the basics of how to site, design and install a photovoltaic system. Students must possess a high school diploma, as well as high school-level knowledge of trigonometry, angle geometry and algebraic equations. The registration fee is $599.

Prior to enrolling in the Photovoltaic Installer’s Course, students must satisfactorily pass a math and electricity assessment. Beginners will be required to successfully complete a three-session Basic Electricity course that will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. each Monday from March 1 through March 15. Cost is $99.
