Will Coordinate SUNY Orange’s Advising, Counseling and Retention Programs for Students

PHOTO: Dr. Crystal SchachterMIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Dr. Crystal Schachter, who has academic and professional ties to a handful of educational institutions throughout the Hudson Valley, has been named SUNY Orange’s new director of advising and counseling, it was announced recently by College President Dr. William Richards.

Schachter, who earned her Ph.D. in educational administration and policy from the University of Albany in 2007, was most recently the director of freshman advising and transition programs at Hunter College in New York City. While at Hunter, she coordinated freshman orientation programs and veteran student services, supervised freshman advising and programs, developed E-Advising systems, and worked to improve assessment and evaluation methods for retention programs.

Schachter completed her associate’s degree in human services from SUNY Ulster in 1998 before acquiring her bachelor’s degree in psychology (2000) and master’s degree in counseling/community psychology (2001) from Marist College.

A licensed mental health counselor by the New York State Education Department, Schachter has also advised and counseled students at Columbia-Greene Community College, Dutchess Community College and the Culinary Institute of America. During her three-year tenure at CIA, she counseled students, created outreach programs and provided necessary referrals to off-campus services for students.

While pursuing her doctorate at Albany, she served as managing editor for the Book Review feature of the “The Review of Higher Education” and coordinated the School of Education’s undergraduate initiatives.

SUNY Orange’s advising and counseling staff provides a full-range of non-clinical counseling, oversees students’ academic advising, coordinates services for veterans of the armed forces, assists adult students in their return to the classroom, operates the Student Success Center, administers the Placement Assessment Test for new applicants, and conducts a wide array of retention programs designed to help students reach their academic goals.

Schachter resides in Woodstock, N.Y., with her husband Ben.
