Student Clubs, Local Businesses and Community Organizations to Participate

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange will be holding an Earth Day celebration, featuring exhibits, demonstrations and free food and drink, on the Alumni Green of its Middletown campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.

The event, which will follow a campus cleanup initiative on Tuesday, April 21, is part of the College’s “Global Initiative: Sustaining the Earth,” a yearlong educational program designed to examine issues of environmental stewardship, explore measures to sustain a healthy environment for years to come, and celebrate local and global solutions to environmental problems.

The College’s student Engineering Club will display an electric car and boat, and will be joined by the following companies and organizations who have agreed to participate: Cornell Cooperative Extension, Sycamore Farms, (a food co-op), Middletown Honda (demonstrating its new hybrid automobile), Orange & Rockland, Orange County Soil and Water, Southeastern Beekeepers Club and Pleasant Stone Farms. The event has been organized jointly by the Global Initiative committee and the student Biology Club.

“We are coming to the end of a very successful first semester of Global Initiative,” said committee chair Paul Basinski. “We wanted to end the semester on a high note, and I can’t think of a better way than for us to gather on the green to celebrate Earth Day and continue learning about new and innovative ways we can preserve our environment. This is going to be a wonderful event that has a strong student presence and also involves community organizations.”

The celebration will be held outdoors, rain or shine. For more information on “Global Initiative: Sustaining the Earth,” contact SUNY Orange at (845) 341-4343 or visit
