SUNY ORANGE ORCHESTRA SEEKING ENTRIES FOR CONCERTO/ARIA CONTEST

9/18/2008

Competition Open to SUNY Orange Students and Orange County High School Students

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – The SUNY Orange Community Orchestra, once again seeking to showcase the talents of young local musicians, is accepting applications for its seventh annual Concerto/Aria Competition, which will determine soloists for the orchestra’s Feb. 28, 2009, concert at Middletown’s historic Paramount Theatre.

SUNY Orange students, as well as Orange County high school students, are eligible to enter the contest, designed to provide a featured musical performance opportunity for outstanding young instrumentalists and vocalists from within Orange County.

A panel comprised of music faculty from SUNY Orange, as well as professional musicians from the Hudson Valley, will judge auditions for the instrumentalists and vocalists in the College’s Orange Hall Theatre from 9 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009. In case of inclement weather, auditions will be held during the same time period on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009. Students must complete and submit an application by Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. Applications can be downloaded from the SUNY Orange web site (www.sunyorange.edu) or obtained by contacting the College’s Arts and Communication Department at (845) 341-4787.

The length of the performance piece should be between 10 to 20 minutes. Music composed prior to the 1850s will be accepted automatically as an audition piece, as long as it has a published and available orchestral accompaniment. Literature composed after the 1850s will also be considered, but needs prior permission from Dr. Hilarie Clark Moore, director of the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra.

Because the orchestra will be performing Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto” during its planned Spring concert in May, clarinetists are encouraged to perform other works.

Depending on the length of the repertoire, a partial or complete instrumental concerto, or multiple vocal arias, may be performed. All applicants must be accompanied by a piano accompanist and each applicant must bring his/her own accompanist.

Past winners of the contest include Sarah Tusch, Valentina Ponochovnaya, George Courtsunis, Radhika Shah, Lucie Jaronowski, Tim Takagi, Clare Herceg, Emily Moore, Rachel Conklin and James Rose.
