Six June Performances of Upbeat William Finn Planned

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – “A New Brain” is coming to SUNY Orange for six June performances, thanks to SummerStar Theatre’s upcoming production of the upbeat musical by William Finn.

Slated for the College’s Orange Hall Theatre, shows will be held at 8 p.m. on June 13, 14, 20 and 21, as well as 4 p.m. on June 15 and 22.

“A New Brain” follows a young composer, Gordon Schwinn, as he is taken to the emergency room for “trouble in his brain.” As Schwinn sits in the hospital, the show takes the audiences in and out of his reality, in which he is surrounded by a wacky hospital staff, family and friends.

When the show journeys inside Gordon's brain, the songs in his head are all he cares about as doctors predict his days are limited. Schwinn’s “heart and music” keep him alive as he sits confined to a hospital bed. This energetic show includes a cast of 10 in a dance-crazy, musical journey through events similar to those of Finn's life.

Gordon Schwinn is played by Jim Nurre, who has performed in past SummerStar
productions, including a role in “Proof” and starring as Huck Finn in “Big River.” Lou Medina plays Roger, Schwinn's partner. Allison Hightower, Jill Carroll, William Schwartz, Nick Butler, Tim Mullally, Fay Gerbes, Justin Randolph and Terry Odell, round out the rest of the acting team. The production is directed by Max Schaefer, with musical direction by Amanda Williams and choreography by Jill Carroll.
