Local Performers Piotr Kargul and Christa Damaris Among Concert Highlights

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Local performers Piotr Kargul and Christa Damaris will be the featured performers on May 10 as the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra concludes its 10th season with an 8 p.m. concert at Middletown’s historic Paramount Theatre.

Under the direction of Hilarie Clark Moore, the orchestra will take the stage for an evening of music that will include Vaughan Williams’ “Suite for Viola and Small Orchestra,” Johannes Brahms’s “Alto Rhapsody,” Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” and the world premiere of “Azure Island for Orchestra,” a piece written for and dedicated to the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra by Washingtonville High School graduate Jared Cowing.

Damaris, a renowned local performer who also directs the SUNY Orange Madrigal Singers, will be the alto soloist during “Alto Rhapsody,” which will also include the College’s Madrigal Singers. The Brahms piece was arranged for the orchestra by Ron DeFesi, artistic director of the Hudson Opera Theatre.

Kargul, who previously played with the orchestra from the fall of 2003 until the fall of 2004, will be featured on viola during the performance of “Suite for Viola and Small Orchestra.” It will mark his first viola solo with the orchestra. A member of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, Rockland Symphony Orchestra and the String Ensemble of Rockland, Kargul has played numerous venues throughout the Hudson Valley.

Charles “Duke” DeFesi, who has played piccolo and flute with the College’s Community Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble and Symphonic Band, will narrate “Peter and the Wolf.” Cowing, who played in the orchestra from the fall of 2004 through May 2005, currently studies composition and audio production at Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y. In addition, he studies and plays the bassoon and piano.

General admission to the concert is $5. The Paramount Theatre is located at 17 South Street in Middletown and is universally accessible. The concert is sponsored by the SUNY Orange Arts and Communication Department. For more information, contact (845) 341-4787.
