Kaplan was nominated by SUNY Orange’s Board of Trustees in appreciation of his long-time commitment to the advancement of education in the Hudson Valley and for his staunch support of the College.

The NYCCT awards program, established in 1976, recognizes individuals who’ve demonstrated extraordinary leadership and achievement, dedicated and effective service, and commitment to community. They serve as models of excellence for students, faculty, staff and administrators throughout New York State’s community college system.

The banquet, prepared and served by students in the renowned Hotel and Culinary Arts Program at Schenectady County Community College, was held as part of NYCCT’s 54th Annual Spring Conference, scheduled through April 12 at the Holiday Inn in Schenectady. SUNY Orange Trustee Dr. Arthur Anthonisen accepted the award on Kaplan’s behalf. Kaplan, who was unable to attend the banquet, will receive his award during a small reception hosted by the College this summer.

“It was our honor and privilege to nominate Mr. Kaplan for this very deserved honor,” said Joan Wolfe, chair of SUNY Orange’s Board of Trustees. “He has been a long-time friend of the College. Thanks to his generosity, passion for education, vision and encouragement, SUNY Orange has prospered and our students have been given opportunities to pursue their academic dreams.”

“We are pleased to recognize such a distinguished group of winners,” said NYCCT President Anton Kasanof. “Each of the individuals we honor has volunteered countless hours in service to SUNY’s community colleges and we are extremely grateful for their extraordinary contributions. It is, after all, the self sacrifice and good will, exemplified by these people, that makes the community college contribution to the vitality of our communities such an invaluable gift.”

Kaplan, the Kaplan family and the Kaplan Family Foundation have long been trusted friends of SUNY Orange. Kaplan recently donated a very generous gift toward construction of a new branch campus in Newburgh, he’s supported development at the existing Newburgh Extension Center and has funded scholarships that have benefited countless SUNY Orange students.

Over the years, he has been instrumental in helping further SUNY Orange’s mission of “reaching out to all citizens of Orange County to enrich their lives through the highest quality of education possible.”

A respected and admired civic leader, Kaplan, has helped construct or renovate countless not-for-profit buildings in and around the City of Newburgh. He has also philanthropically contributed to the advancement and/or creation of educational programs and facilities that have generated opportunities for countless residents in the Hudson Valley.

NYCCT is a voluntary nonprofit consortium of community college trustees established to strengthen the effectiveness of New York’s community college trustees as an active force in the development and implementation of public policy impacting community colleges. NYCCT’s mission is to strengthen trustees of community colleges through education, advocacy and communication. The organization represents the appointed board members who govern the 30 community colleges in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and the six community colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) system.
