Competition Open to SUNY Orange students and Orange County High School Students

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Applications are being accepted for the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra’s sixth annual Concerto/Aria Competition, which will determine musical and vocal soloists for the orchestra’s early spring concert on March 16, 2007 at Middletown’s historic Paramount Theater.

SUNY Orange students, as well as Orange County high school students, are encouraged to enter the contest, designed to provide a featured musical performance opportunity for outstanding young musicians and vocalists from within the county.

A panel comprised of music faculty from SUNY Orange will judge auditions for the instrumentalists and vocalists in the College’s Orange Hall Theater from 9 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008. In case of inclement weather, auditions will be held during the same time period on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. Students must complete and submit an application by Friday, Dec. 14, 2007. PHOTO: Rachel ConklinThe length of the performance piece should be between 10 to 20 minutes. Music composed prior to the 1850s will be accepted automatically as an audition piece, as long as it has a published and available orchestral accompaniment. Literature composed after the 1850s will also be considered, but needs prior permission from Dr. Hilarie Clark Moore, director of the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra.

Depending on the length of the repertoire, a partial or complete instrumental concerto, or multiple vocal arias, may be performed. All applicants must be accompanied by a piano accompanist and each applicant must bring his/her own accompanist.

Past winners of the contest include Sarah Tusch, Valentina Ponochovnaya, George Courtsunis, Radhika Shah, Lucie Jaronowski, Tim Takagi, Clare Herceg, Emily Moore and Rachel Conklin (last year's winner, shown at right).
