Fundraising Scenarios, Marketing Approaches and Viability Strategies Among Topics Discussed

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Fifty participants representing 40 of the Mid-Hudson Valley’s nonprofit organizations attended SUNY Orange’s Philanthropy Day on Tuesday (Nov. 14) for topical discussions on strategic approaches to fundraising and marketing in the nonprofit sector.

Attendees at 2006 Philanthropy DayPhilanthropy Day was organized by the College’s Institute for Nonprofit Leadership and Management, under the auspices of the SUNY Orange division of Continuing and Professional Education (CAPE).

Eric G. Heffler, CFRE, president of Certified Charitable Fundraising Counsel, delivered the keynote address, discussing examples of recent fundraising activities related to historic and turbulent events. A lively panel consisting of Bill Madden, president of Madden Communication and Marketing, LLC.; Peter Reiner, director of Admissions and Marketing at Long Island University’s Rockland Graduate Campus; and John Eccleston, president of Open Gate Marketing; provided practical information for nonprofits to market themselves in an increasingly competitive environment.

Lisa Gallina, director of Marist College’s Goshen Extension Center, delivered a case study in which she witnessed first-hand the financial downfall of a nonprofit. Her experience taught her that a well-diversified portfolio of funding streams is necessary to sustain any nonprofit organization.

John Checklick, president and chief professional officer of Orange County United Way, was the day’s master of ceremonies.

The Institute for Nonprofit Leadership and Management at SUNY Orange provides valuable educational resources and professional tools to allow nonprofits to become more proficient and successful in reaching their organizational goals.
