Database News
The SUNY Orange Library provides access to over 70 different databases. These databases are frequently updated or changed. This page will give you information about new features or changes to the databases.
February 2009:
Listen to and download articles from Opposing Viewpoints
Every article in the news and current Events database Opposing Viewpoints is now available as an audio download. You can either listen to the article directly or download an MP3 file that you can load to your favorite audio device to listen later. The audio is created by a program that reads the article in a male voice. The sound quality is excellent and the voice sounds like a human reading the article aloud. At times the voice does sound like a computer.
To try this feature navigate to any article that interests you. When the article loads you will see an audio player, "download MP3" and "read speaker help" buttons (see the image below). To listen to the audio click the play button on the audio player (the button at the left). If you wish to listen to a specific part of the article highlight the desired text with your mouse and then click play. If you wish to download the article click the Download MP3 button and save the file to the computer.
A help file that describes all the features is available through the ReadSpeaker Help button.

December 2008:
CLIO Notes Added to Ebsco History Databases
America: History & Life and Historical Abstracts each include CLIO Notes, offering factual essays of important events. Researchers are able to go quickly from general information about an era to finding articles on a particular topic.
Advantages of CLIO Notes:
- Are sorted in chronological order and include era's name to make browsing more effective.

- Have chronologies for identifying key concepts and people and link to overviews of eras and the events that occured in them.

- Suggests ideas for research topics and links to article searches in the databases.

Try it yourself!
The link to CLIO Notes can be found at the top menu bar of the database pages for America: History & Life and Historical Abstracts as shown in the image below.

Access America: History & Life or Historical Abstracts by visiting the library's History section of the Databases by Subject page.
