Tutorial Services Frequently Asked Questions

Is tutoring available on campus?

Yes. Tutoring is offered by appointment in the Learning Assistance/Tutorial Center and on a drop-in basis in academic department labs.

Who may be scheduled for tutoring?

Tutoring is available to currently enrolled students at SUNY Orange. You must have good class attendance and bring your course notes and textbook to your scheduled tutoring sessions.

Where is the Learning Assistance/Tutorial Center?

In Middletown, the Learning Assistance Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Library. At the Newburgh Extension Center, tutoring takes place in Room 122.

How much does scheduled tutoring cost?

There is a $30 processing fee for a full semester of scheduled sessions.

How do I get started?

Pick up an application packet from the Tutorial Receptionist in the Learning Assistance Center and follow the steps outlined.

What are the Learning Assistance Center Hours?

In Middletown, the hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In Newburgh, the hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

When can my scheduled tutoring begin?

When your paperwork is completed, a tutoring schedule is arranged for you based on when you are available and when a tutor for the course you are taking is available. You will be given a start date by the Tutorial Receptionist.

How do I know my tutor is qualified?

Tutors are recommended by the faculty and have done very well in the subjects they are tutoring. Tutors participate in orientation and training sessions.

How often may I come for scheduled tutoring?

Sessions are usually scheduled for one hour, twice a week per course.

May I drop-in for Tutoring Help at the Learning Assistance Center?

For drop-in help, you may go to the tutorial labs on campus such as the Mathematics Department Lab in Harriman Hall, Room 305. Drop-in help in the Tutorial Center is available only as posted.

How do I become a Tutor?

If you are interested in being employed as a tutor, you may stop by the Learning Assistance Center for an application packet.
