Travel-Learn Trips

In addition to our regular courses, Encore offers Travel-Learn opportunities. These are one day trips, sometimes with a pre-trip or on-the-bus lecture. They are most often scheduled during the early part of the college's Fall and the later part of its Spring semesters. They feature unique opportunities to visit actual sites and learn first-hand. Occasionally they are also offered during the January intersession and the summer months. All trips are open to MEMBERS ONLY.

Our guided tour, "History and Tradition", will take us to all the important spots, a tour of the cemetery, time to pause along Trophy Point and enjoy the panoramic views of the Hudson River. Then we'll indulge in the famous hot & cold buffet at the Hotel Thayer. Afterwards, our last stop will be the Visitors Center, its exhibits and gift shop. Cost: $75 (covers transportation, tour, lunch & gratuities).

    Our tentative schedule is:

8:30   a.m.       Depart Middletown at SUNY Orange

9:15   a.m.      Begin our bus tour with our guide at West Point Visitors                                                             Center

12:15 p.m.       Hotel Thayer Hot & Cold Buffet Lunch

2:00    p.m.       Return to Visitors Center,  tour exhibits & Gift Shop.

4:00    p.m.       Arrive in Middletown, same parking lot. IMPORTANT :

You MUST use the printed registration form that members will receive in the mail. It requires more federally required information about each visitor. Because West Point is a federal facility, we must send this list before we visit. When we arrive, our names and the photo IDs we have listed will be checked by Security. So carefully complete the application AND remember to bring this photo ID with you. The strict rule is: No ID, no entrance onto West Point.

New York City Tenement Museum

What was daily life really like for the thousands of immigrants (perhaps some of them your own ancestors) who poured into New York City between 1863-1935. Experience it for yourself on Encore's travel-learn trip to the renowned Lower East Side Tenement Museum. In these carefully restored apartments and shops, Museum guides will take you back to the "living" past. Everything you will see and hear has been researched and reconstructed from anecdotal accounts, immigrant family histories, and historical records. Perhaps, too, we'll ponder new insights into current debates about immigrants. After the tour (approximately 1 hour), you are free to lunch on your own at your choice of local restaurants, including the famous Katz Deli.

New York Ballet At Saratoga

New York Ballet dancers perfoming "Rodeo"

Join Encore for this special treat: one of only three performances of NYC Ballet' latest program on July 9, 2015. Featured is Justin Peck's newest performance, "Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes". Peck's version uses Aaron Copeland's original score, Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, originally created for choreographer Agnes de Mille in 1942. "Using Copland’s dance suite," The New York Times says, " (Peck) takes things from the music that evoke the complete “Rodeo” ballet: informality; jocularity; a single woman holding her own amid a community of outdoorsy men.' " Further, "The work's energy, charm, inventiveness, musicality and polish proved irresistible....Mr. Peck's work is pure dance."  Two other program features are "Square Dance" (Vivaldi & Corelli/Balanchine and "Western Symphony" (Kay/Balanchine).   Prior to the 2 p.m. production, we’ll have an elegant buffet lunch at the renowned Hall of Springs.
