A Survey of the use of the “SMART Board” The following summarizes the data obtained from a student survey of all of my classes in spring 2008 dealing with the use of “SMART Board” technology in my teaching of CHEM 120 and CHEM 104. The survey includes both Newburgh and Middletown students. > There were approximately 160 hits on the website from about 70 total students.. > 97 % of the students wanted the “SMART Board” to be used over the Chalkboard. > They were able to review the notes at a slower pace to get a better understanding, comprehension and recollection of the notes. > The website aided with the worksheets, test and quizzes that were taken over the semester by use of different colors to specify the steps in various problems. > The website aided in clarifying many of the equations and concepts since a large amount of math is involved in Chemistry. > It allowed one to obtain notes during a brief absence from class so that it becomes easier to understand and catch up on the lecture. > It filled in the blanks that were missing in a student’s notes so that the notes became complete. > The notes were made available exactly as written during class. The following are some reasons why the students wanted the “SMART Board” to be used over the Chalkboard: > The notes were easier to read from the screen. > It was much easier to follow because there was the possibility to go back and review what was written weeks ago if needed. > Notes on the blackboard were erased and forever lost. > It allows them to view the examples on-line when put on the website. > It seems to allow a lot more material to be stored. > Color differential is helpful for a stage by stage analysis of a problem. There was only one major complaint, which was stated by 3% of the students surveyed, with using the “SMART Board.” The complaint was that it took too long to configure. This is true in HO-1 right now. The projector is on an angle and that tends to move the orientation every once in a while. Hopefully this will be fixed in the near future.
