1. What is an online student course evaluation?
An online course evaluation is a web-based survey asking students questions about their course, classroom and instructor.
2. Why should I complete a course evaluation survey for each of my courses?
The evaluations provide students an opportunity to give valuable feedback to their instructors so they can create better learning environments for students at SUNY Orange.
3. Do instructors actually look at students' responses and comments?
YES! Instructors read and care about what students report on the evaluations. Your feedback helps instructors in revising their teaching methods, changing textbooks, revising assignments and making other changes to help students learn.
4. Will my grades be affected?
Student course evaluations have NO impact on your grade(s)! Instructors do not get to view any of the results until after final grades are submitted. Additionally, all responses are completely anonymous. Completing the evaluations are voluntary, but they are your one opportunity to have a voice and impact the quality of teaching and learning at SUNY Orange.
5. When will I be able to complete the online course evaluations?
For a two-week period towards the end of every Fall and Spring semester, students will be asked to complete an online evaluation for each of their courses. The evaluations for each of the 3 summer sessions will run for approximately one week each.
For Summer 2008, the evaluation dates are:
Session 1 July 3-July 10, Session 2 July 31-Aug 7, Session 3 Aug 14-Aug 21.
6. How do I complete the course evaluations?
All evaluations will be completed online. You will receive an email to your SUNY Orange email account giving you instructions on how to complete an online course evaluation, your login information including your username and password, as well as a “ Login Now” button. When you click on the button, you will be automatically directed to a login page. After you login, a list of courses to evaluate will appear; click on the name of the course to complete the evaluation.
7. Is there another way to login to complete the evaluations?
Yes. On the SUNY Orange website, there will be a CourseEval logo. Simply click on the logo to login and access your course evaluations. The CourseEval logo can also be found on Self Service Banner.
8. What is my login information?
Your login information consists of your username, FirstNameLastName (no spaces). Your Password is your Banner “A” number (“A “ is uppercase)
9. What if I don’t know my SUNY Orange email address or my Banner "A” number?
There are several places to find your email address and your “A” number. Your username and password will be emailed to your SUNY Orange email address. Your “A” number is located on your course schedule. The college’s Helpdesk can provide you with your college information as well: 341-4749 or 341-4735 or email helpdesk@sunyorange.edu.
10. Can I complete the course evaluations from off-campus?
Yes, simply login to access the evaluations through your SUNY Orange email or the logo on the college's homepage.
11. How long does it take to complete an evaluation online?
On average, it will take students approximately 5-10 minutes to complete one course evaluation. Students may take more time, however, depending on the length and depth of comments that they make.
12. If I don't finish an evaluation, can I complete it later?
Students can return to finish a course evaluation at anytime before the evaluation period closes. Simply log back into the system to complete your remaining course evaluations.
13. Can I still complete an evaluation after the evaluation period is over?
Evaluations cannot be completed before or after the evaluation period. It is not possible for a student to complete the evaluation once the deadline has passed. Complete your evaluations as early as possible; do not wait until the last day to do the evaluation.
14. Will my responses by anonymous?
YES, your responses are completely confidential and anonymous. Faculty will only receive a summary of all the responses for their course and only AFTER student grades are distributed.
15. If my responses are anonymous, why do I have to login?
Students are required to login so that the system can determine the courses that you are enrolled in and whether an evaluation has been submitted for an enrolled course. A login prevents individuals from submitting an evaluation for a course that they are not enrolled in as well as prevents multiple evaluations to be submitted for the same course. When evaluations are submitted, they cannot by traced back to the student.
16. How is my anonymity maintained?
SUNY Orange has contracted with an outside vendor to manage and store the evaluation data. Students log on and are redirected to the third party site to complete the evaluation. SUNY Orange has a manager of the CourseEval software within the college's Institutional Research Office. No faculty member has access to the students' identifying data. The online system is designed so that when students submit an evaluation, their personal information is severed from their responses.
