Frequently Asked Questions:

How do these courses differ from AP or IB courses?

AP and IB courses follow very specific curricula to offer eligible students a challenging learning experience. These courses do not automatically transfer as college credits. For college credit, students must take an exam. The score on this exam determines if college credit will be considered. Each college has its own policy regarding how many college credits are assigned for a given score on the exam.

Courses offered through the CCHSP Program are college courses. Students experience the same expectations they would have on a college campus. "Homework" is not necessarily expressively given, nor is it the major determining factor in grading. Instead, students must learn how to independently follow a course syllabus to prepare themselves for class lecture and participation. It is often this sudden change in independent learning responsibility that causes college freshman the greatest challenge.

Who is eligible to participate in the CCHSP Program?

High school seniors need an 85 cumulative average in their Regents courses to be eligible to apply. Students need a minimum score of 85 on the appropriate Regents exam for the college course they wish to take. Additionally, students must be recommended by their teacher(s) and their high school guidance counselor as having the maturity and responsibility to be successful in the CCHSP Program.

Exceptional high school juniors may apply if they have a 90 cumulative average in their Regents courses and have earned at least a 90 on the appropriate Regents exam(s).

A student who fails to meet eligibility criteria can only enroll in a SUNY Orange CCHSP course with an academic waiver approved by the appropriate SUNY Orange department chair. Requests for such waivers are made by either the high school principal or guidance director. High school officials who wish to make a waiver request on a student's behalf should contact the SUNY Orange CCHSP Program Coordinator for details. Requests will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate SUNY Orange department chair

What if I don't want to receive College credit, can I still participate?

Students may register to audit courses and, if they choose, change their status from audit to credit within the specified time frame. The deadline for CCHSP students making such a change is extended two weeks beyond the date printed in the College Catalog. All course work must be complete and students on audit status pay full tuition and count toward class enrollment maximums. Students participating with an audit status do not receive college credit and college grades are not issued. Credit and grades for the course may count toward high school graduation.

How do I apply?

If you are eligible for the program, speak with your guidance counselor. He/She will provide you with the specific application information for your high school.

How much is Tuition?

One of the benefits of the CCHSP is the markedly reduced tuition rate charged for courses given at the high school. Each participating school district determines responsibility for payment. Students should see their high school guidance director for details. See Tuition & Fees for more information.

How do I register for CCHSP courses?

At the beginning of each semester, course registration cards and other registration materials will be made available at each participating high school. These forms should be completed in accordance with the directions given by the Office of Records and Registration. The registration forms should be returned to your teacher or high school guidance counselor who will submit them as a group to the Office of Records & Registration.

Your social security number is used to identify you as a college student. If you do not remember your social security number, do NOT make one up. Failure to submit your actual social security number will result in difficulties in accessing and utilizing your college credits for transfer or towards a degree at SUNY Orange.

Am I a "real" SUNY Orange student?

Yes you are. You are a non-matriculated student. This means that you have not applied to the college and therefore have not been accepted to the college. However, you still must follow the college's policies, rules and regulations. You are also provided the same rights and privileges as other college students. If you decided to attend SUNY Orange after high school graduation, you must apply to the college for matriculation status.

SUNY Orange CCHSP students are invited to obtain college IDs, use the SUNY Orange Library, Remote Database Link, and Fitness Center, participate in College activities, and attend College cultural events. Once course registration is fully completed, IDs and listings of upcoming events are available at the Student Life Desk just outside the SUNY Orange Bookstore entrance in the College Commons or at www.sunyorange.edu/lyceum. Information regarding the Remote Database Link is available at the Reference Desk in the College Library.

How do I get the textbooks & How much do they cost?

In most instances, students purchase their own books at the SUNY Orange Bookstore. However, in some cases the district provides books. Books are available at the College Bookstore typically two weeks prior to the start of the semester. Please check Bookstore Information for hours and locations. Book cost approximately $75 - $150 dollars per text.

Do I get a College ID?

Yes. Only AFTER you have completed the College's registration process and this information has been entered into the College's computer. Generally you should wait three weeks after you have completed the College's registration process to go to the "Student Life Desk" outside the College Bookstore in the Shepard Center to get your ID

Can I get a parking permit for campus?

Yes. When you get your College ID you may request a parking permit. Be certain to have the license plate number, make, model and year of the car you will be driving. You have a two week grace period after the semester begins to get your parking permit.

Are the courses offered in the CCHSP program the same as classes at the main campus?

Yes. Your high school is considered an extension center of the College. The course content and student expectations are exactly the same. Additionally, your instructors are approved using the same acceptance criteria as SUNY Orange adjunct instructors. The courses offered through the CCHSP Program are assessed and monitored in the same manner as those on the College's main campus.

Are the instructors college professors?

Yes. Course instructors may be either SUNY Orange faculty members or high school teachers who have been approved using the same standards as adjunct college instructors. In all matters pertaining to course instruction, procedure, and content, the instructor is accountable to the college and must follow SUNY Orange department and College policy.

Are CCHSP courses transferable?

College credits earned in the CCHSP Program transfer to institutions that are part of the State University of New York (SUNY). Credits also transfer to many other public and private colleges. Typically a grade of C or better is required to transfer credit for a course to another academic institution. Students registering for courses through the program should be aware that transfer credit awarded is always determined by the receiving institution; CCHSP students are therefore advised to inquire about course transferability by calling the Admissions Office at the institution(s) to which they plan to apply. Of those who reported to the 2004 CCHSP student survey, 95% were able to transfer their courses and credits. For more information see Transferring CCHSP Courses.

I've heard that CCHSP courses/credits do not transfer. What might be the reason?

Here are some reported reasons:

  1. Grade achieved was a C- or less.
  2. Transfer Institution does not accept ANY concurrently earned credits.
  3. "I did not try to transfer the courses"

How do I transfer my credits?

To transfer your credits, you must complete a Transcript Request Form. This form is available through the Records and Registration office at SUNY Orange and online at http://www.sunyorange.edu/academic_services/transcripts.shtml. There is a fee for this service. You may request official transcripts by phone by calling the Records and Registration office. You must have the complete mailing address for the college you wish to have the transcripts sent.

Do my grades transfer?

You must check with the college you plan to attend. Your grade will be reported on your transcripts. However, in many cases the grade itself is not applied to the accepting institution's transcript.

What can I do if my transfer college does not accept my credits?

When requesting credit, be sure to explain that these credits were earned through a Concurrent Education Program (CEP) as the policies regarding these programs are quite specific. If the transfer college or university does not initially accept the credits, please contact your high school guidance counselor, who may request that an official syllabus be sent to the academic institution for review. If the transfer college or university does not accept the credits, you may try CLEP (College-Level Examination Program). More information regarding CLEP can be found by clicking on the following link:
http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

Can my parents call the college for information?

A parent may call the college for general information about the program and for guidance regarding transfer issues. Student progress or other issues involving a student's records are made available in accordance with the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. See FERPA for more information.

For further information regarding college policies and student's rights & responsibilities, refer to the College's Student Handbook and/or College Catalog. Both are available in your schools guidance office.
