OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

The Associate Degree Nursing Program provides for the development of those competencies expected of registered nurses in general nursing practice at the technical level. Emphasis is on patient care in the preparation of women and men for a career in nursing. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurse (RN).

The job of a nurse is to administer nursing care to ill or injured persons, but the overall role is quite varied and broad in application. The nurse must watch the patient's skin color, dilation of pupils, and utilize computer equipment to monitor vital signs. He/She must record the patient's medical information and vital signs, and administer local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics. He/She must prepare the patient for and assist with examinations as well as order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and to assess the patient's condition. The RN also provides prenatal and postnatal care to obstetrical patients under the supervision of an obstetrician.
