OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
Successful completion of this program will prepare students to begin their careers in medical organizations. Examples would include doctors' offices, hospitals, clinics, and medical centers; nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and laboratories. Emphasis is placed on developing office skills and knowledge of medical terms. Students learn to use modern office equipment and are exposed to realistic office situations through internships.
The course of study would include such basics as computer keyboarding, accounting, medical ethics and law, medical physiology, medical transcriptions, human resource managment, medical coding, and records management.
A medical secretary or administrative assistant plays a vital role in the health care profession. They are responsible for the administrative and clerical work in medical offices, hospitals, or private physicians' offices. They answer phone calls, order supplies, handle correspondence, bill patients, complete insurance forms, and transcribe dictation. They also handle bookkeeping, greet patients, schedule appointments, arrange hospital admissions, and schedule surgeries.
