Marketing
Business Major
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
This course of study prepares students for positions ranging from sales trainee to marketing manager. Emphasis is placed on developing such skills as communication, decision-making, and problem-solving. Attention is given to such core business skills as accounting and computer information systems as well as liberal arts courses. Topics discussed include strategic planning, selling principles, advertising procedures, and international marketing. In general, the skills acquired working in a sales environment are universally required: listening, speaking, public presentation, decision-making, time management, product specification knowledge, and an ability to "connect" with people quickly. The job of a sales representative is an essential one for any manufacturer regardless of the product sold. The job requires an ability to interest wholesale and retail buyers and purchasing agents in the merchandise and to answer any questions or concerns. Sales reps market their company's products to manufacturers, wholesale and retail establishments, and government agencies among other organizations. These representatives spend much of their time traveling to and visiting prospective buyers and current clients. They might even help install new equipment and train employees. After the sale, the representative makes follow-up calls to ensure the equipment is still functioning properly. These sales reps may also have additional responsibilities after the merchandise has been sold. They may have to analyze sales statistics, prepare reports, handle administrative duties dealing with expense accounts for traveling, schedule appointments, and make travel arrangements.
Overall, the employment of manufacturer's and wholesale sales representatives is expected to grow more slowly than the average for all occupations through the year 2008. However, many job openings will result from workers who leave the labor force or who transfer to other occupations. The greatest opportunity for employment in this field will be in areas where there is a great demand for the products manufactured whether they be electrical goods, computer and data processing products, paper products, machinery, or groceries.
Students in the SUNY Orange program are able to transfer to a four-year college to continue their education.
