CIS (Computer Information Systems)

Business Major

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Computer science involves the study, design, installation, maintenance, and general support of computer systems. While some parts of the discipline are highly theoretical, most computer sciences must also deal with the intensely practical applications to real-life machines and problems. Typically, a computer professional exercises a wide range of skills on the job; a single day's work might require consultation with users, design of a program, actual writing of a program, hardware installation, preparation of a report, and an oral presentation to a group of people. Of course, different careers may involve more of one activity and less of another.

Some computer scientists work primarily with the development of testing of computer hardware; their work is much like engineering and they may rarely write a program. Others (systems and applications programmers, software engineers) spend most of their time designing and developing new programs (software) to solve particular problems that have been presented to them. Still others (systems analysts) work on developing precise definitions of problems to be solved. One very important activity is software maintenance-repairing and modifying existing programs to improve their function.

Business data processing (handling business records, accounts, finances) employs many computer professionals, but the growing industry of computer technology to almost every aspect of daily life has opened up a huge number of jobs. Government agencies such as the IRS, schools and universities, research organizations, the communications industry, and manufacturers of all kinds, each have jobs available in almost every part of the world, in medium-sized towns as well as in metropolitan areas.

Many opportunities exist for graduates with a Bachelor's degree; job prospects and choices improve for those with a Master's degree.
