OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

The curriculum at SUNY Orange prepares students for job entry with architectural, engineering, and construction firms. The graduate would be able to find work in property management; in building supervision; in construction site management; as an estimator for building projects; as a draftsman who works in pencil or with computer assisted drafting; and as an apprentice for an architect.

With a two year degree this person can create detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications to inform others about how devices, parts, equipment or structures are to be made, constructed, assembled, modified or maintained. The draftsperson could draw rough and detailed scale plans to scale for foundations, buildings, and structures, all according to specifications. This person can lay out and plan interior room arrangements for commercial buildings, and draw charts, forms, and records using the computer assisted equipment. He/She will make traced copies of plans and drawings, lay out schematics and wiring diagrams used to erect and install and repair established cable and electrical systems, using computer equipment. This person needs to be able to use mathematics to solve problems and clear reading comprehension to understand written sentences and paragraphs to work in related documents. He/She must be able to use logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of any building approach.
