Accounting
Business Major
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
Accounting is a profession that provides financial information to decision makers. It is the lifeblood of any business or government agency: decisions to acquire or dispose of companies, to expand, to change or add product lines, to arrive at a price to charge a customer, and to do many other things in business cannot be made without the input of an accountant.
This course of study is designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions such as a full-charge bookkeeper, junior accountant, accounting clerk or office manager in the private, public or government sectors. The student becomes familiar with a variety of accounting concepts, practices, and automated procedures. Topics include general ledger maintenance, financial statement transactions, payroll, sales tax, and employer periodic reporting requirements. Graduates are also prepared for the Certified Bookkeeper Exam offered independently by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.
Any student interested in transferring to a four-year school should enter the A.S. Degree in Business: Accounting.
Accountants belong to a very reputable people-oriented profession. They interact with other professionals and business executives at all levels, and their advice is sought by people of varied backgrounds. Accounting graduates often command the highest entry-level salaries among college graduates. An accounting background is often desired in the appointment of high-level executives.
A number of career opportunities are available to accounting graduates. Graduates may choose to work in public accounting and become CPA's, work in the federal or state government, work in industry and financial institutions. Accounting is also an excellent preparation for law school.
