Financial Aid Refunds

When will I receive my financial aid refund?

Financial aid is disbursed to student accounts periodically through out the semester. Once enough financial aid has been disbursed to your account so that current semester charges are paid in full, if you have a credit balance remaining, a refund will be issued within 14 days.

Spring 2014 grant refunds (PELL / TAP) will be issued beginning : March 7, 2014

*This does not guarantee your refund will be issued that day, rather that the first group of grant refunds will be issued on this date, and not before.

How do I know when my financial aid has been disbursed?

You can monitor your student account online:

  1. Log into your MySUNYOrange account.
  2. Select the "Banner College Information" icon.
  3. Select the "Financial Aid" tab at the top.
  4. Select "Award"
  5. Select "Award Payment Schedule" and choose the current aid year.

In this screen, you can see all financial aid that has been finalized for the current aid year and the expected amount. The "expected payment date" is the date your aid is scheduled to disburse to your account. The amount "paid to date" represents aid that has already been disbursed to your account.

Note:

  • TAP is not disbursed until certified by the state of NY, so the "expected payment date" cannot be pre-determined.
  • If the "expected payment date" has passed, and the amount "paid to date" is $0, please contact the Financial Aid Office to find out why your aid has not been paid.

Am I due a financial aid refund?

Once your aid shows as "paid to date", you can monitor your student account to see if you are due a refund:

  1. Log into your MySUNYOrange account.
  2. Select the "Banner College Information" icon.
  3. Select the "Student" tab at the top.
  4. Select "Student Account"
  5. Select "Account Detail by Term"

This screen will show your billing history at SUNY Orange. The most current semester is at top. If the "Detail Account Balance" shows a negative balance, you are due a refund. A refund should be issued within 14 days.

Use this screen also to monitor when the refund is posted to your account. Your refund will show as a line item within the current semester in the "charge" column.

Can I pick up my refund check when it is ready?

No, beginning in Spring 2014, SUNY Orange will partner with HigherOne to issue student refunds.

For information on how this process will begin, please read the Bursars Office Refunds page.

Be sure to have your student information up to date. You can change your address information at the Bursar office (Middletown) or Student Services Central (Newburgh).

If I drop a class, how does that affect my financial aid?

If you decide to drop a class during the semester, your financial aid could change. Many factors determine if and how your financial aid will change by dropping a course (enrollment status, date, type of aid, etc.).

Impact of dropping a course prior to February 11, 2014:

  • Federal Aid (PELL grant, Stafford loans, Unsubsidized loans) - Course will not qualify for aid.
  • State Aid (TAP grant) - Course may qualify for aid, if instructor indicates you began the course.

Impact of dropping a course on or after February 11, 2014:

  • Federal Aid (PELL grant, Stafford loans, Unsubsidized loans) - Course will qualify for aid if the instructor indicates you began the course.
  • State Aid (TAP grant) - Course will qualify for aid if the instructor indicates you began the course.

Important Note: Students with loans must be enrolled in at least 6 financial aid eligible credits at the time the loan is disbursed, and your instructors must have indicated you began attendance in those 6 credits.

If you have specific questions about your current semester financial aid eligibility, please e-mail Bill Potter at william.potter@sunyorange.edu, and include your SUNY Orange ID number.

If you have specific questions about your future semester financial aid eligibility, please contact the financial aid office.

What happens to my financial aid if I withdraw from SUNY Orange?

If you have to completely withdraw from all of your courses in any semester, your financial aid may be recalculated. The federal government states that any student who withdraws prior to completing 60% of the semester, will have their financial aid recalculated. A student who completely withdraws after completing 60% of the semester, will not have their financial aid recalculated.

60% date of the Spring 2014 semester: April 1, 2014.

(any student who completely withdraws on or after the date listed above, will not have their financial aid recalculated)

For Full details on how a student's financial aid is recalculated when they withdraw before the 60% date: SUNY Orange's Return of Title IV Funds Policy

If you completely withdraw, and your financial aid is recalculated, you may have a balance due to SUNY Orange. If you are considering completely withdrawing from the semester for any reason, please contact Bill Potter at 341-4111 or william.potter@sunyorange.edu to discuss your options and possible implications.
