President's Report

  • President William Richards referred to the Government Relations Report included in the board packet. All local, state and federal legislators have been visited and were very positive. All legislators pledged their support of SUNY Orange. The last meeting is scheduled with Congressman Maurice Hinchey this week.
  • Also distributed in the board packet was a Resources Development Activities Report. President Richards promised to provide periodic updates to the trustees.
  • The trustees adopted a Resolution Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Brown vs. the Board of Education - a landmark for equity in public education. (Resolultion attached). This Supreme Court decision reversed the long-standing separate but equal doctrine.
  • President Richards attended meetings with Senator Larkin, County Executive Edward Diana, Dan Bloomer and other community members to discuss locating and developing new land for a Newburgh campus. The campus would consist of 25,000 sq. ft. large enough to house the health care professions, a world-class training/development center and a child care center, along with ample parking. Three sites are under consideration.
  • President Richards met with Linda Mueller, the Director of the Family Health Center in Newburgh who pledged support of the College.
  • Enrollment figures are up 3.3%, with significant increases in Port Jervis and Newburgh as well. The Board of Trustees agenda and highlights from the minutes are now available on the college web site.
  • The trustees were invited to participate in SUNY Lobby Day, Tuesday, 2/3/04.
  • The February 2004 board meeting will be held at the Newburgh Extension Center

Report Of The College Governance

Professor Jim Lynch, president of the College Governance System, highlighted the following issues:

  • The Executive Committee of Governance formed a group to devise a statement responding to the SUNY Board of Trustees' Resolution on "value-added assessment." That group's statement, explaining in detail why Orange County Community College's faculty and staff do not approve of the resolution will be reviewed at the 1/14/04 College Assembly and forwarded to the SUNY Board.
  • Academic Reorganization will again be a topic of discussion at the next College Assembly. Vice President Rule's current plan for reorganization will be reviewed.
  • President Richards has suggested that the Executive Committee fully review the role and structure of Governance, having a close look at the relationship among the Standing Committees.

Report Of The Student Trustee

Student Trustee Donald Boyce announced that two student orientations would be held on 1/13 and 1/15. 20 volunteers comprised of students and faculty for the program "Putting the Pieces Together" will greet approximately 60 students.
