Frequently Asked Questions - Faculty & Staff

What is Banner?

Banner is a suite of Oracle-based software applications developed specifically for higher education institutions by Sungard SCT. The Banner applications include modules especially for the areas that pertain to Students, Finance, Human Resources, Financial Aid, and Alumni. One of the primary distinguishing features of the Banner system is its database structure which allows for online real time access. This comprehensive system makes it easy to manage data while giving students, and faculty secure access to the information they need, when they need it. Information from admissions through academic history is available over the Web for the convenience of students and staff providing extraordinary customer service. This software will provide a framework that is flexible and robust enough to grow with our institutions evolving needs.

Why are we moving to Banner?

Our current systems cannot easily share data between them. For instance student information and human resource information are on two separate systems. Banner will solve the problems associated with systems that "don't talk to each other" and will allow easy access to information through a secure, robust central repository. College records will be housed in one large relational database so that information retrieved and reports generated will draw from current, non-duplicative information. With Banner we will set up our own Unified Digital Campus, an environment in which individuals, systems, and communities interact seamlessly for learning, teaching, administration, and achievement.

How are we going to implement Banner?

Banner will be implemented in phases over the next two years according to a specific timeline that corresponds with the academic calendar year. For more specific details on our implementation you can visit our Banner Calendar.

How will this benefit the campus?

The SUNY Orange Banner system will provide integrated, database-driven information that when fully implemented, will provide 24/7 web access to college data/services for students, faculty, alumni and staff. Tech-savvy students today expect personalized attention, convenient self-service, and round-the-clock access from any PC. With Banner we can exceed expectations and enable students to apply for admissions, register for classes, and retrieve financial aid data at their own leisure. We will be able to reduce manual effort, which will free up our staff for more critical activities, and allow us to be more responsive to those we serve.
