FALL 2009 HEALTH PROFESSIONS ADMISSIONS INSTRUCTIONS For additional information regarding any of the following requirements, visit our website at www.sunyorange.edu/admissions/programs/healthreq.shtml. * All applicants for a Health Professions Program must meet the requirements listed below for consideration. This includes students who were originally grandfathered into the former admissions requirements. * Priority in admission to all Health Professions Programs goes to students who have attended Orange County Community College and who are legal Orange County residents. Current enrollment is not required for consideration. * Meeting the Admissions requirements for a Health Professions Program does not guarantee admission into the program due to a limited number of seats in each program. * All admission requirements must be in and/or complete by the deadline date for priority consideration—February 1st. New Applicants: Step 1: Submit Application for Admission along with $30 fee. Step 2: Send in official high school, GED, college or other school transcripts to the Admissions Office. Step 3: Take our Course Placement Assessment in Reading, Writing and Math. If you have taken a college Math and/or English course with a 2.0 or better grade you may apply for a waiver. Step 4: Once you apply to the college, you will receive an Admissions packet containing a Health Professions Admissions Eligibility Form. The packet will also include a flyer listing dates, times and locations for the department specific required pre-admission orientations. Bring admission eligibility forms to pre-admission orientation and submit to department representative. Pre-admission orientation dates and locations can also be found at the website listed above. Step 5: For Dental Hygiene, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Physical Therapist Assistant applicants only - Find the enclosed form for the required documentation of clinical observation. Bring completed and signed form with essay (essay for OTA and PTA only) to your pre-admissions orientation. SUNY Orange Students: SUNY Orange students must meet all Academic and Department Specific eligibility requirements for admissions consideration. A new Admissions Eligibility Form must be submitted each year before the February 1st deadline for consideration into your program of choice. Eligibility forms for 2009 will be available in the Admissions Office starting in July 2008 for students to pick up. Important Note for both New and Continuing Students: In addition to application to the college, students must apply for admission into the Health Professions programs through the Admissions Office. Admission to all Health Professions programs is competitive. Students are considered for admission into the programs based on the completion of all mandatory academic and department specific requirements (see selection process). All requirements must be completed before February 1st in order for a student to be given priority consideration for admission into the program for the fall semester. Radiologic Technology Accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 2850, Chicago, IL 60606-2901, (312) 704-5300, in cooperation with the New York State Board of Health. Radiography is the art and science of using radiation to produce images of the tissue, organs, bones and vessels of the body. Students develop technical skills necessary to create quality radiographic images while applying radiation protection practices. Graduates from this program find employment in hospitals, medical centers, clinics, private physicians’ offices, public health agencies and laboratories. Program facts about Radiologic Technology * This program was established in 1989. * The college accepts 24 students into the program each Fall semester. * The program has had a 100% ten year pass rate on the national board exams. * The employment rate for graduates has been 100% within three months of graduation. * This program is considered a career-track degree program. However, some graduates have pursued higher education in radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Admissions Requirements Academic Requirements: * High school diploma or GED * Eligible to take Freshman English I (ENG 101). * Eligible to take College Algebra (MAT 121), or have completed Intermediate Algebra (MAT 102) or equivalent with a 2.0 or higher. * Completed High School AP Biology (score of 3, 4, or 5); Intro to Biology (BIO 110); General Bio (BIO 101- prior to Spring 2008): or Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO 111), with a grade of 2.0 or better. (Within 5 years of program entry). * Minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.5. Department Specific Requirements: * Attendance at a pre-admission orientation. At this orientation, students will receive and sign off on information pertaining to technical standards, health forms, and criminal record policies. Selection Process Students will be considered for admission into this program based on the completion of all mandatory eligibility requirements, highest combination of Cumulative GPA and credits completed towards the program (listed below), and seats available. Students must meet all of the above requirements to be considered for admission into the program. All Radiologic Technology Admissions Eligibility Requirements must be completed before February 1st in order for a student to be given priority consideration for admission into the program for the fall semester. *Though not admissions requirements, completing the courses below may enhance your eligibility (26 credits): Please be aware that if you have not taken the course within the timeframe listed below, you must retake the course. Important Notes Regarding the Health Professions at SUNY Orange * Number of Seats Available in Each Program: Dental Hygiene: 20 Medical Laboratory Technology: 18 Nursing (Day): 96 Nursing (Evening): 32 Occupational Therapy Assistant: 24 Physical Therapist Assistant: 24 Radiologic Technology: 24 * All Health Professions Programs are two year sequences. As a result, the length of the program will be two years from the fall in which you are accepted. * All clinical and professional courses in the Health Professions Programs meet during the day with the exception of Evening Nursing (4-10pm). * You may submit an Admissions Eligibility Form for one health program only. If you are interested in Nursing, you must choose either Day or Evening Nursing. * Admissions requirements are subject to change each academic year. Please keep in contact with your academic advisor regularly in order to stay informed of possible revisions of admissions requirements. Students must submit an eligibility form each year they wish to be considered for admission. * Please be aware that admission is not guaranteed as the number of eligible applicants often exceeds the number of available seats. We encourage you to explore the possibility of other academic and career options. * All students accepted into a Health Professions program must successfully complete a physical examination which includes a Tuberculosis screening and 10 panel drug test. Information about this requirement will be distributed to students at the department orientation in the spring/summer after acceptance. * Students who are applying for a second attempt in a Health Professions Program must submit a re-entry admission form available in the Admissions Office or at the website listed below.
