FALL 2009 HEALTH PROFESSIONS ADMISSIONS INSTRUCTIONS For additional information regarding any of the following requirements, visit our website at www.sunyorange.edu/admissions/programs/healthreq.shtml. * All applicants for a Health Professions Program must meet the requirements listed below for consideration. This includes students who were originally grandfathered into the former admissions requirements. * Priority in admission to all Health Professions Programs goes to students who have attended Orange County Community College and who are legal Orange County residents. Current enrollment is not required for consideration. * Meeting the Admissions requirements for a Health Professions Program does not guarantee admission into the program due to a limited number of seats in each program. * All admission requirements must be in and/or complete by the deadline date for priority consideration—February 1st. New Applicants: Step 1: Submit Application for Admission along with $30 fee. Step 2: Send in official high school, GED, college or other school transcripts to the Admissions Office. Step 3: Take our Course Placement Assessment in Reading, Writing and Math. If you have taken a college Math and/or English course with a 2.0 or better grade you may apply for a waiver. Step 4: Once you apply to the college, you will receive an Admissions packet containing a Health Professions Admissions Eligibility Form. The packet will also include a flyer listing dates, times and locations for the department specific required pre-admission orientations. Bring admission eligibility forms to pre-admission orientation and submit to department representative. Pre-admission orientation dates and locations can also be found at the website listed above. Step 5: For Dental Hygiene, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Physical Therapist Assistant applicants only - Find the enclosed form for the required documentation of clinical observation. Bring completed and signed form with essay (essay for OTA and PTA only) to your pre-admissions orientation. SUNY Orange Students: SUNY Orange students must meet all Academic and Department Specific eligibility requirements for admissions consideration. A new Admissions Eligibility Form must be submitted each year before the February 1st deadline for consideration into your program of choice. Eligibility forms for 2009 will be available in the Admissions Office starting in July 2008 for students to pick up. Important Note for both New and Continuing Students: In addition to application to the college, students must apply for admission into the Health Professions programs through the Admissions Office. Admission to all Health Professions programs is competitive. Students are considered for admission into the programs based on the completion of all mandatory academic and department specific requirements (see selection process). All requirements must be completed before February 1st in order for a student to be given priority consideration for admission into the program for the fall semester. (301)652-AOTA Occupational therapy uses meaningful human activity as the basis for service intervention to people who have a range of physical, developmental and emotional problems. Our graduates are employed in a wide variety of health, education and community settings including: schools, hospitals, pediatric facilities, day care programs, community health care centers, home care and private practice. The U.S. Department of Labor has identified an increase of 38% in the openings for Occupational Therapy Assistants within the next 10 years. Program facts about Occupational Therapy Assistant * This program was established in 1977. * The college accepts 24 students into the program each Fall semester. * The program retention rate over the past five years is 90%. * The program maintains a 99% pass rate on national certification exam. * The average employment rate for graduates after six months is 100%. * Some graduates over the past five years have continued their education at the professional level. * This program offers an articulation agreement with the professional occupational therapy program at Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York. Admissions Requirements Academic Requirements: * High school diploma or GED. * Eligible to take Freshman English I (ENG 101). * Eligible to take Elementary Algebra (MAT 101) or have successfully completed Developmental Algebra (MAT 020) * Completed High School AP Biology (score of 3, 4, or 5); Intro to Biology (BIO 110); General Bio (BIO 101- prior to Spring 2008): or Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO 111), with a grade of 2.0 or better. (Within 5 years of program entry). * Students must attain a minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.0. Department Specific Requirements: * Submit Occupational Therapy practitioner observation form with essay. (15 hour min. with documentation). * Attendance at a pre-admission orientation (includes interview with Dept Chair; problem solving activity and discussion). At this orientation, students will receive and sign off on information pertaining to health forms, drug testing, and criminal record policies. Selection Process Students will be considered for admission into this program based on the completion of all mandatory eligibility requirements, highest combination of Cumulative GPA and credits completed towards the program (listed below), and seats available. Students must meet all of the above requirements to be considered for admission into the program. As a result, the length of the program will be two years from the fall in which you are accepted. * All clinical and professional courses in the Health Professions Programs meet during the day with the exception of Evening Nursing (4-10pm). * You may submit an Admissions Eligibility Form for one health program only. If you are interested in Nursing, you must choose either Day or Evening Nursing. * Admissions requirements are subject to change each academic year. Please keep in contact with your academic advisor regularly in order to stay informed of possible revisions of admissions requirements. Students must submit an eligibility form each year they wish to be considered for admission. * Please be aware that admission is not guaranteed as the number of eligible applicants often exceeds the number of available seats. We encourage you to explore the possibility of other academic and career options. * All students accepted into a Health Professions program must successfully complete a physical examination which includes a Tuberculosis screening and 10 panel drug test. Information about this requirement will be distributed to students at the department orientation in the spring/summer after acceptance. * Students who are applying for a second attempt in a Health Professions Program must submit a re-entry admission form available in the Admissions Office or at the website listed below.
