FALL 2010 HEALTH PROFESSIONS ADMISSIONS INSTRUCTIONS For more information regarding the Health Professions or any other programs at SUNY Orange, please contact the SUNY Orange Admissions Office at (845) 341-4030 or visit us on the web at http://www.sunyorange.edu/admissions/programs/healthreq.shtml. All applicants for a Health Professions Program must meet the requirements listed below for consideration. * Students must submit an eligibility form each year they wish to be considered for admission. However, pre-Admissions Orientations and Observation Forms (if applicable) are valid for three years. * All admission requirements must be in and/or complete by February 1st. * Priority in admission to all Health Professions Programs is given to legal Orange County residents and those applicants who have attended SUNY Orange.  Nursing applicants who are not legal Orange County residents are considered only if there are seats available in the program after all Orange County residents are reviewed (unless they graduated from an Orange County high school within 5 years). * Current enrollment is not required for consideration. * You may submit an Admissions Eligibility Form for one health program only. If you are interested in Nursing, you must choose either Day or Evening Nursing. In addition to completing the process listed on the eligibility form before the February 1st deadline, New Applicants and Readmitted Students must follow the application process described in the viewbook for admission into the college. Once you apply to the college, you will receive a packet containing a Health Professions Admissions Eligibility Form. Important Notes Regarding the Health Professions at SUNY Orange Number of Seats Available in Each Program: Dental Hygiene: 20 Medical Laboratory Technology: 18 Nursing (Day): 96 Nursing (Evening Part-Time): 32 Occupational Therapy Assistant: 24 Physical Therapist Assistant: 24 Radiologic Technology: 24 * All Health Professions Programs are two year sequences. As a result, the length of the program will be two years from the fall in which you are accepted. * All clinical and professional courses in the Health Professions Programs meet during the day with the exception of Evening Nursing (4-10pm). * Admissions requirements are subject to change each academic year. Please keep in contact with your academic advisor regularly in order to stay informed of possible revisions of admissions requirements. * Please be aware that meeting the Admissions requirements for a Health Professions Program does not guarantee admission into the program due to a limited number of seats in each program. * All students accepted into a Health Professions program must successfully complete a physical examination which includes a Tuberculosis screening and 10 panel drug test. Information about this requirement will be distributed to students at the department orientation in the spring/summer after acceptance. * Students who are applying for a second attempt in a Health Professions Program must submit a re-entry admission form available in the Admissions Office or at the website listed below. Emphasis is on direct patient care. Our Nursing graduates are currently employed in hospitals, doctor’s offices, medical centers, nursing homes, schools, private patient care and private industry. Students who are already LPN’s should contact the Admissions Office about the requirements and application deadlines as they are different from those listed below. Program Facts about Nursing * The Nursing program was established in 1952. * The first associates degree Nursing program in the nation to be established at a community college. * Professional nursing courses are scheduled both day and evening hours. * The college accepts 96 day students into the Nursing program each fall semester. * Over the past several years approximately 90% have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. * This program has articulation agreements with Mt. St. Mary College, The Sages, NYU, Dominican College and Pace Univ. Admissions Requirements Academic Requirements: * Earned a high school diploma or GED. * Eligible to take Freshman English I (ENG 101). * Eligible to take Intermediate Algebra (MAT 102), or have completed Elementary Algebra (MAT 101) or equivalent with a 2.0 or higher. * Completed within 5 years of deadline: Intro to Biology (BIO 110) or Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO 111), with a 2.0 or higher; or High School AP Biology (score of 3, 4, or 5); or a passing grade on the Biology CLEP examination. * Attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Department Specific Requirements: * Attendance at a pre-admission orientation. At this orientation, student will receive and sign off on information pertaining to health forms, program standards, and criminal record & drug screening policies. * Applicants for the Nursing program will be required to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Students may be required to take remedial courses in Nursing based on test results. Test times will be announced. * The Nursing Department will review transcripts of those students who have been enrolled in a nursing program at SUNY Orange or another college. Selection Process Students will be considered for admission into this program based on the completion of all mandatory eligibility requirements, highest combination of cumulative GPA and credits completed towards the program* (listed below), Orange County residency, and seats available. Students must meet all of the above requirements to be considered for admission into the program. All Nursing Admissions Eligibility Requirements must be completed before February 1st in order for a student to be given priority consideration for admission into the program for the fall semester. *Though not admissions requirements, completing the courses below will enhance your eligibility (34 credits): Please be aware that courses not taken within the timeframe listed below or grades lower than a 2.0 in any of the science courses below will not be considered.
