Frequently Asked Questions about SUNY Orange
Why is an education at SUNY Orange a bargain?
Funding for SUNY's community colleges is shared among the state of New York, the local county sponsor and the student. Orange County Community College prides itself on being cost- effective at the same time it provides quality education. The tuition - $1,500 per semester for full-time students - is among the lowest of the 30 community colleges in the state. It is also well documented that students with an Associate's Degree could earn $225,000 more over their career than someone with a high school degree alone.
What does SUNY Orange offer for adult students returning to college?
Several years ago, Orange recognized the needs that non-traditional students (adults) faced. A Center for Adult Life-Long learning (CALL) was developed. The purpose of the center is to provide a supportive environment, re-entry counseling, workshops and seminars and other means to address the special needs of adults returning to school.
What kind of services do you have for students with disabilities?
Orange is committed to accepting those with disabilities. Our coordinator for special services provides special assistance on an individual basis. Students with these concerns should call for an appointment 341-4070.
Does SUNY Orange give college credits based on military training, experience and other courses taken at service schools? What about credit for general life experience?
Yes, on a case-by-case basis. If the service member is not on active duty, the college may grant up to 30 credits. If the service member is on active duty, the college may grant as many as 45 credits. Non-military general life experience credit may also be possible on a case-by-case basis.
Will my credits be accepted or transferred easily, and to where?
SUNY Orange has degrees that are specifically designed to help students transfer to the school of their choice. With the assistance of our transfer counselor, our students have successfully transferred to most SUNY colleges and universities as well as other public and private institutions such as R.I.T., Pace, NYU, Fordham, Cornell, Vassar, Columbia, and Marist, to name a few.
How can I fit college courses into my busy life?
Classes are held days, evenings, and weekends during the fall, spring, and summer sessions. On-line courses are also offered for your scheduling convenience. Be sure to register early for the best selection. Please be aware that although SUNY Orange is a two-year school, many of our graduates take more than 2 years to complete the required coursework for a degree.
Can I take college courses while still in high school?
High school juniors and seniors are welcome to apply to our College Experience Program and start earning college credit while experiencing college life first-hand. Community College in the High School is also available and offered during the school day at participating high schools. In either program, students who meet our academic requirements can gain a competitive edge by earning college credits while still in high school.
Are there student activities?
The student Senate votes on how to use your student activity fee and offers concerts, plays, and activities at a low cost or even free to students. Trips to Broadway shows, the Bronx Zoo, and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular are among the regularly scheduled events each year. There are all kinds of clubs, as well. Depending on your interests, you can join a group, which will definitely add to your Orange experience and may even enhance your employability. For more information on activities, contact the Office of Student Life.
